Georgia Tech comes into Saturday's Homecoming Game with Duke with renewed hope of a successful ACC season. After suffering conference losses to Clemson and Pitt, things were looking grim. But, that changed last Friday as they traveled to Louisville for the first time and dismantled Bobby Petrino's Cardinals 66-31.  Falcons fans were happy to see the shellacking of their former head coach who skipped town in the middle of the night. That follows a similar 63-17 stomping of Bowling Green the previous week. Only the fourth time in ACC history that a team has scored over 60 points in back-to-back games.
Georgia Tech enters the week leading the nation in rushing offense by averaging 373.0 ground yards per game. In the Louisville victory, the Yellow Jackets rushed for 542 yards, the third most in team history, the most ever in a conference game. TaQuon Marshall has scored in his last 14 possessions. He and LG Parker Braun were named ACC Quarterback and ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week.
They'll be hosting a Duke team that has been playing well at 4-1. That includes wins over Army West Point (34-14), road wins at Northwestern (21-7) and Baylor (40-27). They come into this game having lost their ACC opener 31-14 to Virginia Tech. Much to head coach Paul Johnson's dismay, the Blue Devils will be playing Tech after a bye week. He has complained about that recurring pattern in the past.
"If you want to stay alive in the conference race, it's a huge game for both teams," said Johnson at his weekly press conference. "You're just trying to win another game. You take them one at a time. They're all hard. It's a home game for us, it's an important game for us, so we need to put our best foot forward."
But, the Yellow Jackets have handled them well at Bobby Dodd Stadium where they have won 10 of the last times. However, David Cutcliffe has turned around his team's fortunes in recent years winning three of the last four games against Tech (2014, 2015 and 2017). In last year's matchup, Duke earned a 43-20 win in Durham as QB Daniel Jones threw two touchdown passes while the Blue Devils
held Georgia Tech scoreless after halftime.
He's been impressed, though, with the GT offense saying it is "maybe as good as I've ever seen them." "They've gotten better every game, and their last two, they've really played at a high level," he said. "They're doing more as it goes along, as they learn what they're doing."
Kickoff is another early game on Saturday at 12:20pm carried locally on CW69.
