This edition of Clean Old Fashioned Hate has a lot on the line for both teams. As a result of Georgia Tech's second half collapse last week at Duke, they are now 5-5 needing one more win to become bowl eligible. And this is their last shot. They could appeal to get in on five wins because of the cancelled game at Central Florida after Hurricane Irma. But, that is no guarantee. They are still working to schedule a 12th game with no success so far.
For Georgia, there are loftier goals. With just one big blemish on their 10-1 record being the embarrassing loss at Auburn, they still have a chance to get into the College Football Playoffs. That loss dropped them from #1 to #7. But, two of the top four teams play each other in the ACC Championship Game with the loser between Miami and Clemson probably falling out. Two of the other teams ahead of them play on Saturday in the Iron Bowl. The winner between Alabama and Auburn will face UGA in the SEC Championship Game. Win that and it should propel the Bulldogs back into the final four...especially if its an undefeated #1 ranked Crimson Tide.
But, they can't look past this game on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets would like nothing better than to derail all of those plans for the Dawgs. And, they've won two of the last three meetings.
It will be at least the first of two straight games the Bulldogs play in Atlanta with the SEC Championship Game the following Saturday. And there next game could be in the same site either in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl or the National Championship Game, both of which will be at the Mercedes Benz Stadium, now without its neighbor, The demolished Georgia Dome.
One of the biggest hurdles Georgia Tech has faced this season has been the inability to hold on to big leads. Time after time, they have gotten ahead only to squander the lead in a loss. In the season opener, they had a 14 point lead two different times over Tennessee only to lose in overtime 42-41. They had the opportunity to win only to miss what would have been an easy game winning field goal. Incredibly they dominated the Vols in time of possession 56 to 18 and in total yards 655 to 369 and still lost.
At #2 Miami, they lead by 11 two different times only to see the Hurricanes score the final 13 points and win in the final minute.
At Virginia, the Yellow Jackets blew a 28-13 lead in a 40-36 loss.
Then the worst was last week at Duke, who had lost six in a row coming in. Tech lead 14-3, then 20-13 and watched as the Blue Devils scored the final 31 points in an embarrassing 43-20 loss.
But, what that should tell the Bulldogs is that the Jackets have been in or leading in every game except Clemson and could easily also be 10-1.
Georgia, on the other hand, has dominated most of their opponents and has rarely trailed except to Auburn and Notre Dame.
