Excitement is building for the undefeated No. 13 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, who are off to their best start in years. You can definitely feel the “buzz” on campus. Next up are the 2-4 Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Georgia Tech works on extending its perfect start and Virginia Tech is eager to turn their season around.
In fact, the Hokies were so upset about the way the season has been going that they fired their head coach, Brent Pry on September 14, after a 0-3 start culminating in an embarrassing loss to Old Dominion. Offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery was named interim head coach. They established a search committee last week to look for the next head football coach.
Georgia Tech Riding Momentum – Georgia Tech’s season has gone in the opposite director, soaring to a 5-0 record, marking their highest ranking in the national polls since 2011. Head coach Brent Key’s team has impressed fans with their balanced and explosive offense, averaging over 470 yards per game, while showcasing a stout defense. “Our guys have been consistent, focused, and hungry—every week we come out ready to compete,” Key said earlier in the week, expressing confidence in his squad.
The Yellow Jackets come off a bye week that allowed time for rest and strategic preparation, reinforcing their goal to keep the winning momentum going. Their roster is bolstered by the tough play of quarterback Haynes King, who missed last season’s game but has been instrumental in the current success.
Virginia Tech: Looking for Momentum – The Hokies, under interim head coach Montgomery, have a 2-4 record but showed promise in recent weeks despite setbacks. Coming off a narrow 30-23 loss to Wake Forest, the Hokies will aim to pull off a road upset in Atlanta. Montgomery emphasized the importance of improving execution and reducing mistakes: “We’re fighting and working on getting our team to play at the level we know they can,” he stated, emphasizing the need for sharper play.
Last season’s matchup resulted in a 21-6 victory over Georgia Tech in Blacksburg, but much has changed since then. The Jackets were playing without King, who missed his second-straight game due to injury.
LB Kaleb Spencer leads the team in tackles (30) through six games. On offense, wide receiver Takye Heath has been a key target.
Betting Odds and Predictions – Sportsbooks list Georgia Tech as a substantial favorite, with a spread of -14.5 and a total over/under of 55.5 points. Despite the odds, the Hokies’ toughened defense and grit could keep the game closer than expected. “Georgia Tech’s offense is among the best in the country, but Virginia Tech’s fight and focus could make this a competitive contest,” analysts suggest.
The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network. Former Yellow Jacket announcer Wes Durham will be doing play by play.
