Georgia Tech heads to Boston College on November 15 in a game loaded with ACC championship and College Football Playoff implications. But, it’s a perfect example of a trap game,” one where a superior team might be looking past a struggling opponent with their eyes on bigger games waiting ahead.
And there are still plenty of teams in the hunt for the title with four teams (Tech, Virginia, SMU and Pitt) sitting at 5-1 in conference with Duke, Louisville and Miami close behind.
Head coach Brent Key’s 16th-ranked Yellow Jackets (8-1, 5-1 ACC) control their own destiny as they look to secure a spot in Charlotte and keep national dreams alive. Boston College, under Bill O’Brien, aims to play spoiler in its final home game.
Georgia Tech Eyes Charlotte, Playoff Berth – After a disappointing loss at NC State, Key challenged his team: “Everything now really comes to a head in these one-game seasons we have left. Our focus has to be 100 percent on the task at hand. If we want to play meaningful games in November, we have to score touchdowns—and that starts this Saturday”. Quarterback Haynes King, who’s thrown for nearly 1,900 yards and 9 touchdowns, anchors an explosive attack ranked in the top 20 nationally. “We’re locked in on execution. Every play, every snap matters from here out,” King said. The QB has also rushed for nearly 800 yards and 14 TDs.
Key called out the discipline and red zone execution needed: “We’ve had too many times inside the 10-yard line where penalties backed us up. Bottom line—we need to get the ball in the end zone”. Georgia Tech’s potent pass game, led by Eric Rivers and Isiah Canion, squares off against a Boston College defense allowing over 34 points a game.
Boston College Hoping to Spoil the Party – O’Brien’s Eagles (1-9) have endured a tough campaign, but the coach says pride and opportunity fuel their approach. “It’s our last home game and a chance to send our seniors out winners. We know Georgia Tech is at the top of the conference, but we have guys that keep competing, no matter what,” O’Brien said.
While the Eagles have struggled, their detailed run game and standout kicker remain threats. “They’re a well-coached football team,” Key acknowledged. “Their record isn’t indicative—there’s a lot of talent and effort on the other side, and that stuff can change quickly in college football”.
Stakes and History – Georgia Tech stands just two wins away from clinching its first trip to the ACC Championship Game since 2014, with College Football Playoff hopes in play if the Jackets keep winning. “We want to make history. That’s what’s motivating us right now,” said King. Boston College, meanwhile, seeks to snap a nine-game skid and put a dent in Tech’s title chase in front of the Alumni Stadium crowd.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on the ACC Network, with all eyes on whether Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets can take another step toward Charlotte—and a shot at the playoff dream.
