At ACC Media Days in Charlotte, Georgia Tech football’s confidence and camaraderie were on full display, as coaches and players spoke candidly about their progress, challenges, and team identity.

Head coach Brent Key opened with pride in the program’s recent achievements: “Some of the things we’ve accomplished, first back to back winning seasons and bowl appearances in over a decade at our school, 5-0 at home last year, largely in part because of our fan base and the reenergized students in our student section… We had multiple wins last year over top 10 teams for the first time in program history. But on top of that, we had our third consecutive semester of over a 3.0 GPA with a 3.03. It was the highest in the history of the football program, and that’s at Georgia Tech.”

Asked about predictions and pressure, Coach Key was frank: “We can sit up here as head coaches and talk about the season, but none of us really have any idea how it’s going to unfold. We can’t control that. All we can control is the work we put in, how we prepare, how we build our team and how we play for each other”.

Wide receiver Malik Rutherford spoke about his loyalty and motivation: “I’ve been committed to Georgia Tech since my sophomore year of high school, so I wanted to finish what I started. I was a part of the rebuild, so yeah.” He added, “Because of the depth we have. We never had this much depth in all the years that I’ve been here. I feel like every guy on our team could play ball at the highest level that Coach Key wants us to play at”.

Rutherford also stressed the competitive spirit within the team: “All great guys. We’re all competitive. This fall camp, there’s about to be a lot of competition. We don’t know who’s going to be a starter. It’s up to Coach McKnight. But we come in and work every single day. We go out there and we have fun… we just go out there and compete”.

Linebacker Kyle Efford cut through the noise: “Part of the reason I came on media day is because I (couldn’t) really care less what anyone says to me about anything. The media’s really not gonna affect me. I could have been out here at an empty table feeling fine”.

Summing up the Yellow Jackets’ self-assurance, Coach Key reflected: “The last two media days we’ve come up here we’ve been picked to finish 12th and 10th in the conference and we’ve finished fourth, one of only two teams to finish fourth in the league in the last two years, us and Louisville”.

From the podium, throughout interviews, and between the lines, Georgia Tech made it clear: the program is proud of its recent progress, embraces competition, and is defined by unity and relentless work ethic—not outside projections or past limitations.
