Georgia Tech Football Looks To Be Much Improved in 2025

Anticipation is high as Georgia Tech approaches the 2025 football season, with fans and analysts alike asking: Is this the year Brent Key’s program takes a major step forward? After back-to-back seven-win seasons, some are calling the Yellow Jackets “one of the most interesting teams for 2025,” thanks to significant roster experience, transfer portal additions, and a “favorable schedule” that avoids several ACC heavyweights.

Head coach Brent Key himself acknowledges the team’s upward trajectory: “There’s definitely an improvement that could have been made and they can do better. Now, they’re going to have to do that without the surprise factor this year, but I think overall you feel pretty good about where this team stands.” The sense around the program is caution mixed with optimism—especially now that, as one preview put it, “they won’t be able to have that surprise factor anymore, but this is a team that could still surprise us once again”.

Quarterback Haynes King returns as a focal point, with some seeing him as a “sleeper Heisman Trophy candidate”—provided he stays healthy. Explosive running back Jamal Haynes is “considered among the top five running backs in the nation,” while the receiver corps looks to find new leaders following offseason departures. Defensive questions linger, but staff changes and fresh transfers have energized that side of the ball: “It’s a defense that appear[s] to be in a good spot. I think that the talent is there even with some of the new faces. You bring back the right pieces, the veteran leaders that are going to get the new guys up to speed…”

And the schedule? As one preview notes, “this is as favorable of a draw for Georgia Tech as they could have hoped,” with the potential for the team to “be a threat to make the ACC Championship Game” if week-to-week consistency improves. The season opens with a much-discussed trip to Colorado and a challenging matchup against Clemson later in the fall.

Ultimately, Georgia Tech’s 2025 outlook hinges on converting talent and experience into focused, reliable performance. As a leading analyst sums up, “It’s just going to come down to winning football games … This is a Georgia Tech team that very much expects to repeat that surprise. They expect to repeat the success they had and then some”

The season gets under way on Friday, August 29th in a game televised on ESPN at the Colorado Buffaloes.
