A steady mist surrounded campus and an ominous looking sky managed to hold off a predicted storm.

   But, all of the pouring on was provided by the Jackets.

  VMI came in with a pair of losses at William & Mary (41-7) and to Bucknell 35-28. Tech was coming off a frustrating loss at Syracuse. But, in their favor was the interesting stat that the Yellow Jackets were 10-1 after a Tech loss under Brent Key. The chance of that happening was pretty good in what appeared to be a huge mismatch.

    And that is what it was. Right from the start, the two teams looked like they didn’t belong on the same field together.

   VMI was stifled time and again with one three and out after another. In the first quarter, already up 3-0, the Yellow Jackets needed just two plays to score when Malik Rutherford finished the short drive with a nice 39 yard scoring catch.

   Eric Singleton, Jr. highlighted the next drive with a wide open 50 yard catch. Soon after, Tech was up 17-0. All of that in the first quarter.

   There were so many big plays by the GT offense, it would take too long to mention them all. QB Haynes King and company seemed to be able to move the ball at will with their defense looking equally formidable.

   By the end of the first half, Tech had amassed an impressive 38-0 score. Don’t bother looking up the program record. That was easily 126-0 in that infamous 1916 game against Georgia Cumberland that ended in a record 222-0.

   But, back to this one. Total net yards had Tech with 366 to the Keydets 35 with -16 yards rushing. All of that with a relatively even time of possession.

   The second half started with the clock at 10:00 for a pair of “mercy quarters.”

  The backups were in with Zach Pyron behind center Nothing changed as the Ramblin’ Wreck quickly moved 60 yards downfield in 5 plays and 2:17 to add more and go up 45-0. Soon it was 52-0.

   We assume things will be significantly more difficult as Tech goes back on the road next Saturday for another touch ACC matchup at Louisville.

   The Cardinals are 2-0, outscoring their opponents by a combined 111-14 (Austin Peay 62-0 and Jax State 49-14).

   On top of that, the Cardinals will be well rested with a bye week in between those and next Saturday.

   Kickoff at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium is 3:30 p.m. on ESPN or ESPN2…yet to be announced.
